Jeffs Close Regular Season with Pair of Wins

AMHERST, Mass. – The third-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team closed its regular season with a pair of conference wins on Sunday, posting a 9-0 result against Wesleyan University before edging seventh-ranked Middlebury College, 5-4.

At 13-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play, Amherst will likely receive the No. 2 seed in next weekend's NESCAC Championship. Middlebury drops to 13-2 and should receive the No. 3 seed, while Wesleyan's season comes to a close at 8-5.

Amherst posted three convincing doubles wins in Sunday's first matchup, with Caroline Richman '13 and Safi Aly '15 notably cruising to an 8-0 result at number three. The Jeffs then won five of their singles matches in straight sets, with Isabel Camacho '14 dropping her second set at number four but rallying to win the super tiebreaker (10-6).

Middlebury gave Amherst a run for its money in the second match of the afternoon, but the Jeffs used an exceptional performance in doubles play to hang on for the 5-4 win. All three doubles matches were competitive, as Laura Danzig '12 and Gabby Devlin '14 led the way by coming out on the winning end of an 8-6 result in the top spot.

The Panthers responded with four singles victories, but Amherst picked up key points at numbers two and five. Jennifer Newman '14 had to play a tiebreaker in her second set, but she hung on for the 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win to seal the match for the Lord Jeffs after Middlebury battled back to tie the score at 4-4. Aly accounted for Amherst's other point in singles play, defeating Dorrie Paradies in straight sets at number five (7-5, 6-1).
