MIDDLETOWN, CT – The Amherst College women's tennis team opened its conference schedule with a 9-0 win at Wesleyan University to move to 7-0 overall and 1-0 in the NESCAC. The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Apr. 5 when they host archrival Williams College at 11 a.m., while the Cardinals fall to 6-4 (0-1 NESCAC) and will next host Bowdoin College Sunday, Mar. 30 at 10 a.m.
Amherst played a tough schedule on the west coast but returned to New England with a perfect 7-0 record, and the Lord Jeffs picked up right where they left off. In the third doubles match, senior captain Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) teamed up with junior Anuja Ankola (Scarsdale, NY) to keep her perfect doubles season alive with an 8-4 win. Sophomore Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) and first-year Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) pulled out an 8-6 win in the second doubles match, while sophomore Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) earned an 8-3 victory in the top spot.
Berckes, Wexler, Menezes and Brown also earned singles victories in the first, second, third and fifth matches, respectively. Completing Amherst's sweep were first-years Laken and Carlissa King (Laurelton, NY), who matched each other with 6-1, 6-1 wins in the fourth and sixth spots, respectively.
The Jeffs' upcoming match with Williams will likely go down to the wire, as the last three meetings between the archrivals ended with 5-4 results, with Amherst coming out on top each time.
