AMHERST, MA – The second-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 shutout win of visiting NESCAC foe Trinity College this afternoon. The Lord Jeffs improve to 11-1 with the win, and 5-1 in conference play.
Amherst rolled to a three-point sweep over the Bantams in doubles play, with the top-ranked pairing of sophomore Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) edging Trinity's Driscoll and Tramont 8-6. The Jeffs took the twos and threes doubles matches each with a score of 8-1.
In singles action, Amherst swept all six bouts, with five matches going in straight sets. Berckes defeated Driscoll on court one 6-0, 6-2, while senior captain Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) defeated Gould 6-1, 6-1 at number three.
The first-year trio of Laken and Carlissa King (Laurelton, NY) and Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) surrendered just five total games in the four through six matches. Laken King won her match over Leber without giving up a single game, while her twin sister Carlissa gave up just a lone second-set game to Steckloff.
The longest and most inspiring win of the day came from sophomore Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) at the number two spot. After falling o Tramont in a first-set tiebreaker, Wexler found herself in a 3-0 hole in the second set. The fiery Wexler rallied to roll off six consecutive games to win the second frame. With the match already decided, Wexler and Tramont settled to a super-tiebreaker third set, which Wexler ran away with 10-3.
Amherst will have no time to rest after the match, as they travel to face Wellesley tomorrow, before hosting Middlebury College on Sunday.
