NCAA Individual Championships Set to Kick Off Friday

AMHERST, MA – The NCAA Individual Tennis Championships begin Friday, May 16 and conclude Sunday, May 18, with three members of the Amherst College tennis programs taking part in the weekend's national tournaments. Gustavus Adolphus College will serve as host for the women's championship, while Bates College will host the men's championship.

Sophomore Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and senior Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) return to defend their title, as they captured Amherst's first national doubles crown last year. Berckes and Menezes make up the only NESCAC pair in the tournament and will take on Sierra Krebsbach and Jenni White of Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, May 16 at 3 p.m. in the Round of 16.

Berckes—the 2008 NESCAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year—will also make her first appearance in the singles championship. She will have good practice for her doubles match, as she will be competing against White Friday at 9 a.m. in the singles Round of 32 before meeting up with her again in doubles play at 3 p.m. Should Berckes advance past White, she would take on either Alicia Hunt of Trinity (Texas) or Jenna Mezin of Wellesley Friday at noon in the Round of 16.

On the men's side, junior Zack Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) will take part in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship for the second consecutive year. During last year's national tournament, Lerner won his first two matches before falling to ITA National Senior Player of the Year Matt Seeberger of California-Santa Cruz in the quarterfinals. This year, Lerner will play his first match Friday, May 16 at 9 a.m. against Charlie Cutler of Washington-St. Louis in the Round of 32.
