AMHERST, MA – The eighth-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team earned its 12th straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Monday, securing a first-round bye and the right to host the regional matchups. NESCAC rivals Bowdoin College and Tufts University will face off Saturday at 11 a.m. with the winner continuing to face the Jeffs on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
If Saturday's or Sunday's action should see any inclement weather, the matches will be moved to nearby Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass.
With an 11-3 overall mark and its second straight NESCAC Championship in tow this season, Amherst has advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in eight consecutive years, the NCAA Semifinals in seven of the last eight and the NCAA Finals twice, winning the school's first National Championship in 1999.
Senior tri-captains Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) and Hadley Miller (N. Eaton, OH) have been instrumental in this run and boast a wealth of postseason experience. The Jeffs' No. 1 singles player all season, Raverta has qualified for her fourth appearance in the NCAA Singles Championship and will partner with sophomore Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) in the NCAA Doubles Championship, to be held concurrently, May 20-22, at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC). Miller has consistently performed at No. 5 singles for the Jeffs and won the No. 5 flight at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) last fall. Menezes has been outstanding as well, holding down the No. 2 singles spot, while winning the No. 3 singles flight at the NEWITT, while classmates Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) and Jennifer Murphy (Simsbury, CT) have been similarly impressive at No. 3 and 4 singles. Junior Katie Hudson (Los Altos, CA) rounds out the Amherst lineup, just returning from a knee injury she sustained in the fall.
Amherst has toppled both Bowdoin and Tufts this season, recently posting an 8-1 victory over the Polar Bears in the NESCAC Semifinals and defeating the Jumbos by a matching 8-1 score on April 11. The winner of the regional advances to the national quarterfinals May 17-19, hosted by UCSC.
