Jeffs Fall Just Short in Bid for Second National Championship

May 14, 2004

MEMPHIS, TN - Amherst College fell just one victory shy of claiming its second NCAA Women's Tennis Championship Friday afternoon at the Racquet Club of Memphis, dropping a 5-0 decision to Division III powerhouse Emory University. With the win, Emory (24-1) earned its third national championship and became just the second team in NCAA Division III history to win back-to-back NCAA titles. Amherst finishes its season at 17-4.

Emory, whose only loss of the season came against Auburn-Montgomery, the No. 1 ranked NAIA team in the nation, took a commanding 3-0 lead with a trio of strong doubles performances and never looked back. Defending national doubles champions Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor defeated Amherst's Tristan Hedrick (Walnut Creek, CA) and Rachel Holt (New York, NY), 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Emory's Carina Alberelli and Margaret Moscato downed Wallis Molchen (Wilmington, DE) and Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA), 8-5. Also earning an 8-5 win was the No. 3 team of Jamie Chan and Richelle Marasigan as they defeated Amherst's Hadley Miller (Lancaster, PA) and Erin Murphy (Yonkers, NY).

Needing just two points to claim the NCAA Championship, Emory would get a pair of singles wins from the only two seniors on their roster. First off the court was defending national singles champion Mary Ellen Gordon, who defeated Hedrick, 6-2, 6-3. Margaret Moscato then clinched the victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Molchen. The match was played to decision, leaving the remaining four singles matches unfinished.

Amherst will now set its sights on the individual singles and doubles tournaments, which begin Saturday morning at 9:00 at Rhodes College and the Racquet Club of Memphis. Hedrick, Holt and Raverta have each qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships. Holt and Hedrick will also play in the NCAA Doubles Championships, while Raverta and Molchen were selected as doubles alternates.
