Women's Tennis Wins New England Championship

October 21, 2002

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women's tennis team, fresh off a stunning 6-3 win over two-time defending national champion Williams College, played to another definitive win – this time, a first-place finish at this weekend's New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament, played at Amherst. The Jeffs claimed all three doubles bracket titles en route to the victory, while first-year Kristin Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) snatched the No.1 singles championship from Trinity College's Diana Goldman, 6-1, 6-2.

Amherst sophomore Rachel Holt (New York, NY) had a strong weekend, moving easily through the No. 2 singles field before falling 2-6, 6-4, 10-3 in the championship match to Williams' Stephanie Hall. In the respective No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles brackets, senior co-captain Paige Lawrence (Katy, TX), sophomore Erin Murphy (Yonkers, NY) and junior Wallis Molchen (Wilmington, DE) each cruised into the championship match before being eliminated. No. 4 singles runner-up Katie Nordstrom of Tufts University edged Lawrence, and third-place finishers Kate Troy and Brittany Binet, both from Williams, beat out Murphy and Molchen, respectively. In No. 3 singles action, sophomore Tristan Hedrick (Walnut Creek, CA) made a run into the semifinals.

Holt and Hedrick teamed up in the No. 1 doubles slot to win the field, thanks to an 8-6 win over Colby College in the championship match. In No. 2 doubles, Raverta and Lawrence took the title, beating Trinity 8-3 for the championship. Murphy and Molchen ended cemented the championship with an 8-5 win over Bowdoin.

The first-place showing at the New England Championships concludes Amherst's fall slate on an optimistic note. The team will return to action this spring in search of an extended postseason run and its sixth consecutive trip into the NCAA Elite Eight. The Jeffs won the national championship in 1999.
