REDLANDS, CA - The fourth-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the fifth time in the last six years on Wednesday with a 5-4 NCAA Quarterfinal win over sixth-ranked DePauw University at the University of Redlands (CA). The Jeffs will take on second-ranked Washington & Lee University - which downed No. 12 Pomona-Pitzer 8-1 in the quarterfinals - Thursday at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the NCAA Championship match against either Emory University or two-time defending NCAA Champion Williams College, Friday at 2 p.m.
With the two teams splitting six singles matches, Amherst cemented its victory with a pair of doubles wins. Amherst's Roopali Agarwal (Boxford, MA) teamed with Hadley Miller (Lancaster, PA) for an 8-2 win over Jill Anderson and Alex Nelson, while Wallis Molchin (Wilmington, DE) and Erin Murphy (Yonkers, NY) downed DePauw's Kristin Gieseke and Kathryn Magill by the same score.
Miller, Molchen and Hadley Miller (Lancaster, PA) each posted singles wins for the Jeffs.
Amherst won the College's first and only NCAA Team Championship in any sport in 1999 and is making its ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Jeffs advanced at least to the NCAA Semifinals for four straight seasons from 1998 to 2001.
