AMHERST, MA - For the second straight season, the NESCAC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Year has gone on to win Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Rookie of the Year honors. This time, Amherst College first-year Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) pulled the feat, duplicating that of sophomore teammate Rachel Holt (New York, NY), who won both awards last spring.
Raverta has had an exceptional rookie campaign, posting a 20-4 singles record and winning the No. 1 singles title at the New England ITA Championships in the fall. She then rebounded from tonselitis to advance to the title match in the No. 1 singles draw at the NESCAC Championship Tournament, held April 18-20, at Williams College.
Amherst (14-3) advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the sixth straight season with Sunday's 9-0 second-round win over visiting 18th-ranked Vassar College. Raverta helped lead the way with a grueling three-set singles win over Vassar No. 1 Alexis Neider. The 2003 NCAA quarterfinal, semifinal and final rounds will be held Wednesday, May 14, through Friday, May 16, at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif.
The Jeffs won the College's first and only NCAA Team Championship in any sport in 1999 and are making their ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Head Coach Jackie Bagwell's clubs advanced at least to the NCAA Semifinals for four straight seasons from 1998 to 2001.
