REDLANDS, CA - The fourth-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to second-ranked Washington & Lee University in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, hosted by the University of Redlands (CA), on Thursday. Washington & Lee will take on top-ranked Emory University for the national championship Friday at 2 p.m. Amherst will play archrival Williams College in the third-place match Friday at 11 a.m.
Amherst sophomore Tristan Hedrick (Walnut Creek, CA) posted the lone match victory for Amherst; a 6-2, 6-2 singles win over Washington & Lee No. 3 Laura Bruno. The Jeffs fell to 15-4 with the loss
Two-time defending NCAA Champion Williams was bounced from the semifinals with a 6-3 loss to Emory. Amherst and Williams have met twice this season, once in the fall and once in the spring. Amherst won both matches, but finished second to Williams at the NESCAC Championship Tournament.
Hedrick, sophomore Rachel Holt (New York, NY) and first-year Kristen Raverta (W. Springfield, MA) will represent Amherst in the NCAA Singles Championships, which run Saturday through Monday at Redlands. Hedrick and Holt will also team up in the doubles championships, which run Saturday through Monday as well.
Thursday's loss marked the fourth time in the last six years Amherst has fallen in the NCAA Semifinals. The Jeffs won the College's first and only NCAA Team Championship in any sport in 1999, and advanced at least to the NCAA Semifinals for four straight seasons from 1998 to 2001.
