BRUNSWICK, ME - Amherst College took an uncommon women's tennis double-header on Sunday, barnstorming through Bowdoin and Bates and taking both matches, 8-1 and 9-0.
The Jeffs kicked things off with a near-sweep at Bowdoin in the morning. Top-seeded senior Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) rolled over Bowdoin's Sanida Kikic 6-2, 6-2 and paired with sophomore Paige Lawrence (Katy, TX) for an 8-2 doubles win over Kikic and Kathleen Maloney. Sophomore Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) also pulled a twin-killing, downing Alexis Bawden 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in singles and, along with senior Carolyn Pastel (Old Lyme, CT), trouncing Chrissy Edwards and Heather Jacobson 8-1 in doubles. Pastel won her singles match over Betsy Hayes earlier in the day, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Elsewhere in the draw, junior Stephanie Fong (Los Altos, CA) beat Maloney 6-3, 6-0 and teamed with classmate Heather Cole (Baltimore, MD) to edge Bawden and Hayes 8-5. Lawrence came from behind to top Edwards 6-0, 6-0 after dropping the opening set 1-6.
At Bates, Cohen once again set the tone with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Suzanne Daly, while Lawrence downed Caroline Reyni 6-3, 6-2, and the pair teamed to drop Daly and Mary Dorman 8-3 in doubles. Meanwhile, Burke defeated Dorman 6-2, 6-0 in singles, Pastel topped Chrystal Arpei 6-2, 6-1, Fong blanked Eliza Scott 6-0, 6-0, and Cole swept Talbot Randall 6-1, 6-3.
Fong and Cole also pasted Arpei and Randall 8-0 in doubles, while Burke and Pastel shut out Scott and Abby Hofman 8-0.
The women's tennis team is now 5-1 on its fall slate, and returns to action this Saturday against Williams at 11 a.m.
