AMHERST, MA - The Amherst women's tennis team suffered its first defeat of the fall at the hands of neighboring UMass-Amherst in a prolonged two-day match, September 19 and 21.
The visiting Minutemen took the dual match 6-3, nearly sweeping the singles competition. Number-two seed Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) provided the lone Amherst singles victory, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 over Annie Hamilton.
Amherst nearly returned the favor in doubles, taking two-of-three matches. The top-seeded team of senior co-captain Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) and sophomore Paige Lawrence (Katy, TX) topped Annie Hamilton and Helena Horak, 8-5, while number-three seeds Burke and Carolyn Pastel (Old Lyme, CT) trounced Susan Hyams and Katie Stammen 8-1.
The Jeffs rebounded with a 9-0 win over visiting NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Friday, September 22. Burke, Cohen, Lawrence, Pastel, and juniors Heather Cole (Baltimore, MD) and Stephanie Fong (Los Altos, CA) all posted singles wins.
Amherst also waltzed through the doubles portion, with Cohen and Lawrence topping Rachel Sigman and Dina Guth 8-4, Fong and Cole edging Nina Zeitlin and Tarsah Dale 7-4, and Burke and Pastel rolling over Allison Rovner and Kelly Schunk 8-3.
The Amherst women's tennis team returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the Rolex Invitation at Brandeis University.
