AMHERST, MA - The top-seeded Amherst College women's tennis team advanced to its fourth consecutive Division III Final Four on Friday with a 7-2 win over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the NCAA Quarterfinals at Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas. The Jeffs - ranked number one in the nation according to the latest WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis Poll - will take on the winner of Friday's 11 a.m. quarterfinal between fourth-seeded host Trinity and Washington & Lee University, Saturday at 9 a.m. in the NCAA semifinals.
NESCAC and ITA Northeast Player of the Year Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) set the tone for the Jeffs with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wisconsin-Eau Claire No. 1 Molly Cope. Cohen also teamed with Amherst junior Vass Kozoulina (New York, NY) to edge Cope and Andrea Muellner 9-7 in No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile, Amherst junior Heather Cole (Baltimore, MD) used a second set tie-breaker to outlast Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jenny Stafford, 6-0, 7-6 (7-1). Senior Amherst co-captain Carolyn Pastel (Old Lyme, CT) then took down Muellner in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, while Kozoulina claimed a marathon win over Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Barb Nellis, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.
The Jeffs swept the doubles in convincing fashion as Cole and junior Stephanie Fong (Los Altos, CA) topped Stafford and Suzie Hickman, 9-8 (9-7). Pastel also paired with Amherst sophomore Susanna Burke (St. Louis, MO) for an 8-4 doubles win over Alison Hover and Megan Tauer to cement the win for the Jeffs.
Amherst will enter familiar territory playing in its fourth consecutive NCAA Division III Final Four on Saturday. The Jeffs claimed their first and only National Championship in any sport at the 1999 Final Four, sandwiched between fourth place finishes in 1998 and 2000. Amherst will likely run into defending National Champion and fourth-seeded Trinity in Saturday's semifinals. The Jeffs drubbed Trinity, 8-1, during their spring trip to California earlier this season and have been ranked number one in the nation ever since.
Friday's other quarterfinal matchups include third-seeded Emory University vs. Gustavus-Adolphus College at 1 p.m. and second-seeded Williams College vs. Pomona-Pitzer College at 3 p.m.
