Jeffs Sweep Tourney with team and individual crowns
EWING, New Jersey -- The 1999 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships wrapped up on Monday afternoon with the crowning of the Singles champion on the campus of The College of New Jersey. Amherst College, which captured the 1999 NCAA Division III Team title on Friday evening, has another reason to celebrate as senior captain Neely Steinberg (Concord, MA) captured the 1999 NCAA Division III Singles title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over the University of Rochester's sophomore Jill Mazza (Elmira, NY).
Amherst's Steinberg went undefeated on the year in singles play (25-0) to capture the college's first national tennis titlist in her first national appearance. Steinberg is the first national champion for head coach Jackie Bagwell, who has just completed her eighth season at the institution and led her Lady Jeffs to the college's first NCAA Division III team championship in any sport.
The singles tourney seemed to be heading towards an all-Amherst finals between #1 seeded Jamie Cohen (Rye, NY) and the unseeded Steinberg. The two play #1 and #2 singles respectively for the Lord Jeffs. Thoughts of the Lord Jeff final were dashed, however, when Cohen was shocked in the semifinals by Rochester sophomore Jill Mazza. Teammate Steinberg exacted a measure of revenge for Cohen in the finals, taking Mazza down in straight sets.
