HADLEY, Mass. – Senior captain Stephanie Moriarty of the Amherst College women's swimming & diving team has been named NESCAC Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.
Contributing 35 points in the Mammoths 171.5-128.5 upset victory over No. 8 MIT, Moriarty started off the weekend with two relay victories, an individual win and a second place finish. In the 200 yard medley relay that finished with a 1:47.33 mark, Moriarty notched a 27.49 backstroke split before swimming the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team in 52.69 to lead to a final time of 3:32.00. Individually, the Wilton, Conn. native clinched gold in the 100 backstroke with a 58.15 second mark, before earning second place in the 200 backstroke (2:05.14).
A day later on Senior Day, Moriarty continued to impress, touching the wall in 27.43 seconds to place first overall in the 50 yard freestyle and helping break a 13-year pool record in the 400 yard medley relay (3:57.75) by swimming the backstroke leg in 28.10 seconds to kick off a quartet that combined for a 3:53.90 mark.
Moriarty and the rest of the Mammoths return to the pool on Friday, Feb. 16 when they travel to Williams College for the three-day NESCAC Championships.
