Conklin Sets Records In Day One Action at NESCAC Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sarah Conklin '16 won the 50-yard butterfly for the third consecutive year Friday with a pool and program record time of 24.73 to lead the Amherst College women's swimming and diving team during the first day of the NESCAC Championships, hosted by Wesleyan University.

After nine events, the Jeffs sit in fourth-place with 403 points. Williams leads the way with 686.5 points followed by Bates (541) and Middlebury (469.5) in second and third, respectively. Rounding out the top-five was Bowdoin with 377.5 points.

Conklin, the 2013 Rookie of the Year, has won the 50 fly title each year she has competed in the conference tournament, and has also improved her time each season. After setting the pool and program record in the prelims with a time of 24.76, the junior improved her mark in the finals. Conklin was the lone Jeff to win an event on the day.

Amherst picked up second-place wins from Emily Hyde '16 and Ashleigh Stoddart '15 in the 200-yard individual medley and the 50-yard freestyle, respectively. Hyde recorded a NCAA 'B' cut mark of 2:02.73, while Stoddart swam in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 23.81.

Stephanie Ternullo '15 excelled in the 500 free and touched the wall in 4:58.85 to claim third-place. Her mark in the event was also a NCAA 'B' cut.

Rounding out the top individual performances on the day for Amherst were Stephanie Moriarty '18 and Sabrina Lee '15 in the 50 back, and Victoria Chao '18 in the 50 breast. Moriarty finished seventh with a time of 27.43, while Lee placed shortly after in 27.48. Chao grabbed eighth-place in her respective event with a mark of 30.61.

In relay events, the 200 free squad of Lee, Conklin, Moriarty and Ternullo placed fifth overall with a time of 1:36.72 before the 400 medley relay team consisting of Moriarty, Hyde, Conklin and Stoddart closed out the day with another second-place finish for the Jeffs as they touched the wall in a NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:49.04.

Amherst returns to the pool tomorrow, Feb. 14 with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
