Jeffs Win Season-Opener, Defeat Union, 168-118

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College women's swimming & diving team earned a 168-118 dual-meet win Saturday afternoon against Union College in the Jeffs' 2014-15 season-opener in Pratt Pool.

Amherst won 13 total events en route to its first win of the year. With the loss, the Dutchwomen are now 1-1 in dual-meets thus far.

A trio of first-years excelled in their first collegiate meet. Leading the way was Marie Maxwell '18 with three individual wins. She claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.48, the 500 free in 5:17.00, and the 1,000 free in 10:48.24. Stephanie Moriarty '18 and Geralyn Lam '18 each claimed two individual victories, while Moriarty also picked up a win as a member of the 200 medley relay. Moriarty won the 100 and 200 back with times of 59.92 and 2:08.01, respectively, and finished the 200 MR in 1:50.31. She was joined alongside Emily Hyde '16, Sarah Conklin '16 and Ashleigh Stoddart '15. Lam picked up wins in the 100 butterfly (58.70) and 200 fly (2:11.23).

In addition to her first-place victory in the 200 MR, Hyde also claimed the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. In the 100, she finished in 1:08.91, while taking the 200 in 2:28.54.

Rounding out the top individual performances on the day for Amherst were Conklin and Sabrina Lee '15. Conklin took the 100 fly in 58.70 and Lee earned first-place in the 100 free with a mark of 54.63. 

Lee, Hyde, Conklin and Stoddart also won the 200 free relay as they touched in 1:41.52.

The Jeffs return to the pool Saturday, Nov. 22 and will host NESCAC rival Colby at 2 p.m.
