#10 Brown Topples Women’s Squash, 7-2

AMHERST, Mass. – Lilly Soroko's '22 arduous 18-16 victory in the fifth set against Brown Universities Isabel Young tinted the Mammoths 7-2 setback against the Bears on Wednesday afternoon at Davenport Squash Courts.

In the third spot, Soroko notched a 13-11 win in the opening set before Young posted demanding wins in the second (11-7) and third (11-1). Soroko was able to pull through in the fourth when the Mammoth won by a slim margin (11-9). In the fifth, both sides refused to give up as they went back and forth until Soroko was able to score back-to-back points, thwarting the Bears effort by a score of 18-16.

Priya Sinha '19 snagged the second win on the day for the Purple & White against opponent Sara Syed. Sinha looked promising early on when she nabbed an 11-6 victory in the first set. Syed countered with an 11-8 triumph in the second before Sinha claimed the final two sets 11-9 and 11-3.

Ashira Mawji '21 and Rachael Ang '19 were both able to steal a set away from their opponents Catherine Kimmel and Hannah Seckendorf. However, after losing the first set, Kimmel walked away with the 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 victory in the final three to defeat Mawji. At number two, Ang fell in the opening two sets (11-6, 11-6) before seizing the third 12-10. Seckendorf didn't hold back in the final set as she posted a conclusive 11-2 mark.

On the final five courts, the Bears swept the Mammoths in the first three sets to snag their fourth victory on the season. Caroline Conway '20 dropped to Alexa Jacobs at number one (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) while Riddhi Sampat '21 lost 11-8, 11-2, 11-8 to Abigail Dichter at number four.

Keeley Osborn '22 fought hard in her first set against Katrina Northrop but was thwarted 12-10 prior to dropping the next two (11-6 and 11-7) for the Brown win. Pierson Klein 20 came close to stealing the second set against Isabella Kearns but ultimately fell by a score of 11-3, 11-9, and 11-5. At Number seven, Scarlett Bergam held Amherst's Margaret Werner to under four points in each set, winning 11-1, 11-4, and 11-3.

The Mammoths will enter day one of the Pioneer Valley Invitational on Friday, January 18th for their next competition when they match up with St. Lawrence at 6:00 PM. Brown returns to action on January 19th when they compete against Middlebury College at Harvard University.
