NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 16 Amherst women's squash team faced off against Division I Yale University in their new year opener, falling to the Bulldogs by a score of 9-0 on Monday afternoon in Brady Squash Center.
Senior Priya Sinha '19 was the only Mammoth to take a set on the Bulldogs when she battled against Jessica Yacobucci in the nine spot. Sinha opened up the first set winning by an 11-8 margin, but lost the remaining three 11-3, 11-5, 11-6.
Aside from Sinha, Amherst was held to under five points in every set they played. Rachael Ang '19 competed in the first and second spots, falling to Lucy Beecroft (11-3, 11-3, 11-2) and Helen Teegan (11-1,11-3, 11-5). Lily Soroko '22 went up against Celine Yeap at number three, losing by a score of 11-4, 11-1, 11-5.
Sinha battled at number four as well, but ultimately dropped to Aishwarya Battacharya 11-4, 11-6, 11-5. Keeley Osborn '22, Ashira Mawji '21 and Katherine Correia '20 all made strong showings in their opening sets, taking five points from their opponents (Emily Sherwood, Nikita Joshi and Ainsley Weber). Osborn went on to fall by a score of 11-5, 11-2, 11-4 while Ashira lost 11-5, 11-2, 11-5 and Correia 11-5, 11-4, 11-4.
With the setback, Amherst drops to 1-2 in their 2018-19 campaign while Yale improves to 3-0 this season. The Mammoths aim to bounce back when they travel to Harvard University to face off against Tufts University this Thursday (January 10th), beginning at 12:00 PM. After their match against Tufts that started at 4:00 PM today, Yale will return to action on January 12th when they host Ivy League foe, University of Pennsylvania, at 12:00 PM.
