PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Amherst College took victories at the #7 and #9 positions, but it wasn't enough to get the Mammoths past #11 Brown University, who handed them a 7-2 defeat on Tuesday afternoon at Kate Brodsky Pavilion.
Priya Sinha '19 scored a five-set win (7-11, 12-10, 12-10, 8-11, 11-4) victory at #7 against Brown's Lauren Kotin, while Jenna Finkelstein '20 came from a game down to handle Megna Poddar in four sets (9-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-7).
The two teams battled through several five game matches, but Brown had the advantage at the top of the lineup with wins in the first six matches,
Sophomore Hannah Seckendorf earned a 3-1 victory at the top of the lineup to set the pace for the Bears. Freshman Alexa Jacobs captured a 3-0 win at number two, followed by Junior Katrina Northrop, who need four sets to get past Kimberly Krayacich '18 at three.
Freshman Catherine Kimmel, a 3-0 winner at four, junior Hannah Safford, who took a 3-0 winner at five, and sophomore Scarlett Bergam, who captured a 3-0 decision at six. Senior Katherine Pisani was also victorious at number eight, rallying from two games down for an 11-13, 6-11, 11-6, 14-12, 13-11 victory over the Mammoths.
Brown is back action at home again on Thursday, January 18, hosting Dickinson at the Pizzitola Sports Center, starting at 5:30 pm.
Amherst returns to their home court on Friday afternoon when they welcome in Dickinson and MIT for the Pioneer Valley Round Robin, beginning at 2:00 PM.
