#15 Amherst Earns 7-2 Win at #25 Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The 15th-ranked Amherst College women's squash team improved to 2-1 with a 7-2 win over No. 25 Smith College Wednesday evening. Amherst will close out the 2011 portion of its schedule by hosting Northeastern University on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m.

Amherst got wins from its top five players, including 3-0 victories by Evelyn Kramer '14, Anna Scheidt '12, Mary Katherine McNeill '13 and Lena Rice '14 at numbers two through five. First-year Arielle Lehman defeated Smith's Jacqueline Zhou in the No. 1 matchup by a score of 3-1, winning her first two games and closing things out with an 11-3 result in the fourth.

The Pioneers got their two points in the sixth and ninth matches. Amherst's Megan Clower '12 won her first two games at number six by scores of 11-5 and 11-7, but Jen Krain came all the way back to take the next three (11-7, 11-9, 11-9). Lord Jeff senior Caroline Dreyspool split her first two games with Catie Blunt in the ninth spot, but it was Blunt who pulled away with results of 11-6 and 11-7.

Amherst senior Rachel Lupien came out on the winning end of a back-and-forth matchup against Jaimi Inskeep at number seven, as Inskeep won the second and fourth games but Lupien took the first, third and fifth. Rounding out the Lord Jeffs' points was first-year Martha Reiser, who defeated Elena Plesco in all three games in the eighth pairing.
