Amherst Falls to Second-Ranked Yale, 9-0

AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst men's and women's squash teams each fell to 3-2 on the season after suffering a pair of 9-0 losses to second-ranked Yale University.

The Lord Jeff men, ranked 22nd in the latest CSA poll, dropped all 27 games to their Bulldog counterparts, with the 15th-ranked women also unable to pick up a win against the No. 2 team in the nation.

Yale sophomore Kim Hay got things started for the Bulldogs at the top of the women's lineup, picking up a 3-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-5) victory over Amherst's Arielle Lehman '15 (Greenwich, Conn.). Senior Rhetta Nadas cruised to a 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-0) triumph over the Jeffs' Kate Savage '12 (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the second slot, with Katie Ballaine '13 securing a 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-1) win over Anne Piper '13 (Bronxville, N.Y.) in the third position.

Gwen Tilghman '14 downed Chandler Lusardi '13 (New York, N.Y.), 3-0 (11-2, 11-5, 11-4), in the fourth spot, while Lillian Fast '14 earned a 3-0 (11-4, 11-2, 11-3) victory over Evelyn Kramer '14 (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

First-year Shihui Mao scored a three 11-1 wins over Amherst's Lena Rice '14 (Philadelphia, Pa.), while Anna Harrison '15, Issey Norman-Ross '15 and Aly Kerr '12 held their own at the bottom of the Yale lineup, notching 3-0 sweeps in the seventh, eighth and ninth positions.

On the men's side, Hywel Robinson '12 recorded a 3-0 (11-3, 11-2, 11-2) win over Scott DeSantis '15 (Sudbury, Mass.) in the top slot, while Kenneth Chan '13 upended Dave Kerr '14 (Short Hills, N.J.) 3-0 (11-2, 11-6, 11-4). After 11-5 and 11-6 wins in the first two games in the third position, Richard Dodd '13 held onto a 11-9 triumph in the third game against Steve Severson '12 (Mercer Island, Wash.) to complete the sweep.

In one of the match's closer contested matchups, Amherst's Charles Loesch-Quintin (Philadelphia, Pa.) fell 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 in the fifth slot, while further down in the lineup, senior Matt Arnold (Larchmont, N.Y.) pieced together a strong showing, dropping a 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-7) match to Yale's Charlie Wyatt '14 in the eighth position.

Amherst's men's and women's squash teams return to action on Saturday, Jan. 14 against Bates.
