Amherst Splits on Day One of Pioneer Valley Invitational

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams opened up the 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational this evening with matches against Hobart on the men's side and a pair of matches against Franklin and Marshall. The men's team topped Hobart 9-0 before falling to F&M 9-0, while the Amherst women beat F&M 9-0 in their only match of the day.

In the first match of a very busy weekend, the Lord Jeff men took on Hobart in the late afternoon.  Amherst won seven of the nine matches in shutout fashion, with Kevin Cecala (Wilmington, DE) getting out a five game win, and Todd Lavine (Atherton, CA) winning 3-1. Cecala won the opening game against Grant Palermo 11-5, but suffered a 9-11 loss in the second stanza. The two players traded 11-9 results in the third and fourth games, before Cecala earned the win 12-10 in the fifth and final game.

In the second match of the evening, both the Lord Jeff men and women took on the Diplomats of F&M. The men's team had just one player avoid a 3-0 loss, with co-captain Tom Rapisarda (New York, NY) taking Sujat Barua to five games. The Amherst senior won the first game 11-7, before losing the second 9-11. Rapisarda closed to within one game of winning the match with an 11-8 win in the third, but Barua responded with an 11-3 fourth game win. In the decisive fifth game, Barua closed out the match 14-12.

The Amherst women opened the Pioneer Valley Invitational in convincing fashion, winning every bout against the Diplomats.  The action on court one drew much of the attention of the crowd, with Chandler Lusardi (New York, NY) topping Chelsea Ross at number two, and Hayley Milbourn (Baltimore, MD) rallying for a comeback win over Morgan Smith at number one. Lusardi dropped the first game 10-12 to Ross, but won three straight sets to take the match. Milbourn fell into a two games to none hole with 10-12 and 11-13 losses to Smith, but turned the match around to win 11-9, 11-8 and 11-6 in games three, four and five.

Amherst will return to action tomorrow with matches against Bates and Middlebury for matches at 9 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.
