10th Ranked Amherst Women's Squash Blanks Tufts, 9-0, in Season-Opener

MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College women's squash team - ranked 10th in the nation according to the latest Women's Intercollegiate Squash Poll - opened its season with a convincing 9-0 blowout win at unranked NESCAC-rival Tufts University on Tuesday. The Jeffs dropped just three games and posted eight shutout wins in 10 matches, led by top-seeded junior Susanna Burke's (St. Louis, MO) 9-2, 9-3, 9-1 win over Anne Montesano. 

First-year phenom Alexandra Gibbs (Greenwich, CT), junior Roopali Agarwal (Boxford, MA) and senior Tara Kenney (West Chatham, MA) swept through the No. 2-4 matches with identical 3-0 scores, while Amherst No. 4 - senior co-captain Mary Frances Ford (Albany, NY) - came from behind to top Eileen Connors in the match of the day, 6-9, 9-5, 9-4, 4-9, 9-4.


The bottom half of the draw took on a similar tone with No. 6 sophomore Emily Stark (Roanoke, VA), No. 7 senior co-captain Lindsay Snyder (Narberth, PA) and No. 8 senior Cara Coscarelli (W. Hartford, CT) each posting 3-0 wins. Meanwhile, Amherst No. 9 - first-year Mara Alcaly (New York, NY) - downed Trina Spear, 3-1, and No. 10 junior Rebecca Muse-Orlinoff (Concord, MA) blanked Maria Garcia, 3-0.


After a sizeable layoff, the Jeffs return to action on Saturday, January 12 at the Williams College Invitational Tournament.
