Juarez Nets Hat Trick in Season Opening Win Over Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Alexa Juarez '22 led Amherst women's soccer in their season opener against Mount Holyoke College, netting three goals as the Mammoths posted six on the night to clinch their first victory of the 2019 campaign Thursday evening at the Mount Holyoke College Soccer Field.

The Mammoths, who were ranked No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III National Preseason Rankings, improve to 1-0 on the year while the Lyons fall to 0-1-1.

The Mammoths opened the scoring just 13:12 into the contest when Sophia Fikke '22 sent a ball past the Lyons defense, which caught up to Juarez who slipped a shot past Maria-Lucia Delgado for the first goal on the evening. The tandem linked up again as Juarez secured her second goal just five minutes later to give Amherst the 2-0 advantage early on.

With 18:33 to play in the first half, Amherst played a short corner kick to Isabel Stern '23 who flicked a ball in the air to Kata Heffron '21 who headed it over Delgado's hand, making it 3-0.

In the second half, Juarez completed the hat trick and tied her career-high goals in a game after scoring in the 57th minute. Juarez obtained this feat during her first season in the purple and white after netting three goals against New England College (9/23/18) in the Mammoths 8-0 triumph.

Up 4-0, Amherst didn't let up as Stern and Izzy Geneve '23 both found the back of the net in the waning minutes to seal the 6-0 victory.

The Mammoths defense held strong, refusing to allow the Lyons offense a shot on net as the Purple & White posted 15 shots on the night. Senior goalkeeper Erica Sanders '20 claimed the win while Delgado recorded four saves.

Amherst will turn the page and set their sights on Bowdoin for a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) match up on Saturday, September 7th beginning at 12:00 PM. The Lyons will travel to SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday in their next competition with a 2:00 PM start.

In October 2018, Amherst proudly recognized Ted W. Beneski '78, P'08 and Laurie M. Beneski P'08 for their extraordinary generosity and commitment to the College by naming the men's and women's soccer program in their honor. The College's naming of the Beneski Soccer Program celebrates the Beneskis' love for Amherst athletics and their longstanding investment in helping Amherst students excel as learners, as players and teammates, and as citizens.
