AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 15 Amherst women's soccer team were tabbed as a Regional host in the NCAA Championship after they received an at-large bid on Monday afternoon, matching them up against Lesley College in the first-round of the tournament on Saturday at Hitchcock Field.
Despite a loss to Middlebury College in the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship tournament where the Mammoths fell to the Panthers in sudden death penalty kicks, Amherst (13-2-2) accumulated enough statement wins to receive an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship. The Purple & White will make their 17th national postseason appearance, with their most recent entrance coming two years ago when they advanced to the Second Round of the tournament.
Amherst will face off against Lesley College (16-4) who enters the NCAA tournament after receiving the automatic bid from winning the New England Collegiate Conference Championship (NECC) in a 3-2 victory over New England College.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) also enters the tournament as an automatic qualifier from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with a record of 16-2-3. The Engineers are set to face off against Vassar College (9-7-1), who received an at-large bid, in the opening round of the tournament.
Check the Amherst athletics website later this week for more details on this weekend's first and second round contests.
