Women’s Soccer Shuts Out 6th Opponent of the Season

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst women's soccer team shut out their sixth opponent this calendar year as they took down New England College by a score of 8-0 in non-conference action at Hitchcock Field Sunday afternoon.

First-year Alexa Juarez '22 had an outstanding performance as she marked a hat trick in the first 50 minutes of regulation while also adding an assist to finish off her day. Juarez's first goal came in the 8th minute when she carried the ball into the box and put it past the goalkeeper in the bottom right corner of the net. Juarez followed up her effort in the 24th minute with a remarkable diving header off a cross from Sloan Askins '20. Her final tally of the day came from a penalty kick where she was able to slot it past the goalkeeper in the 49th minute.

After Juarez's showing that put Amherst up 3-0, they did not let off the pedal as four other Mammoths contributed to the score line in the second half. Caleigh Plaut '19, Hayley Roy '20, Claire Nam '21, and Julia Ralph '21 all scored to maintain the distance from the Pilgrims. A mistake which led to an own goal on New England's defensive half added to the final score line in the Mammoths favor.

The Pilgrims were only able to notch two shots on frame over the course of 90 minutes, both of which came from Bridgette Winters. Amherst finished with 34 total shots, 20 of them being on frame.

The Mammoths were able to grab four assists on the day which came from Askins, Roy, Juarez, and Natalie Landau '21. The Purple and White also marked 10 corner kicks compared to New England's one.

Both shots that the Pilgrims had were saved by Antonia Tammaro '21 who finished with the win. New England's goalkeeper Kayla Pugliese had six saves in 57 minutes of play where Emily Sashko matched her in the final 33 minutes of the game.

With this win, the Mammoths improve to 5-1-1 on the year while the Pilgrims fall to 4-5-1.

Amherst will return to NESCAC action on September 30th as they travel to Tufts University to kick off at 12:00 PM. New England College returns on September 25th as they host Fitchburg State University at 7:00 PM.
