AMHERST, Mass. – A pair of goals from Grace Orr '19 and Hannah Guzzi '18 lifted the Amherst College women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over NESCAC rival Bowdoin College Saturday afternoon in the 2015 home opener at Hitchcock Field.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while the Polar Bears were handed the loss in their season opener (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NESCAC).
After 44 minutes of competitive action in the first half, both teams looked as though they would enter the break scoreless. However, with five seconds remaining before the break, Orr sent a floater from the right endline over the outstretched arms of Bowdoin goalkeeper Bridget McCarthy to give the Jeffs momentum heading into the second half. It was Orr's first goal of her collegiate career.
Amherst held a slight 9-8 edge in shots during the first 45 minutes, with five on net compared to two by the visitors. The Purple & White also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half featured a similar story, but Bowdoin was unable to get past senior netminder Holly Burwick who was terrific between the posts as she recorded four saves in her first shutout of the season.
At the 55th minute, Guzzi added an insurance tally when Maeve McNamara '19 sent a forward pass through Bowdoin defenders as Guzzi outpaced her opponents. With only McCarthy to beat, the sophomore dashed to her left and slipped past the goalie for an empy net score.
The Jeffs outshot the Polar Bears 17-14, with an 8-to-4 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Despite the loss, McCarthy made six stops in net for Bowdoin.
The Purple & White return to the field Tuesday, Sept. 15 and will host Springfield College at 7 p.m.
