SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Trailing by one at halftime, the Amherst College women's soccer team rallied in the final 45 minutes of regulation to edge Mount Holyoke College, 2-1 Tuesday night in the 2015 season opener on the road.
The Jeffs (1-0) controlled the tempo of the game as they outshot the Lyons (1-2) 37-5, including a commanding 22-1 advantage in the second half. Amherst also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks, while its stingy defense allowed just three shots on net.
The first goal of the game occurred at the 17:05 mark when Ashleigh Hartsock assisted on a marker by Sara Sanau Ruiz to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Amherst came out strong in the second half, however, and evened the game at 1-1 just 2:13 into play, when Ashlyn Heller '17 found the back of the net unassisted.
In her first collegiate game of her career, Maeve McNamara '19 led the Purple & White with seven shots, while Alex Sotak '17 and Delancey King '18 each tallied five. Holly Burwick '16 picked up the win between the posts and stopped two shots.
Sanau Ruiz recorded four of the Lyons' five shots, with two on net, and Zoe Marshall totaled seven saves in goal but was credited with the loss.
The Jeffs return to the field Saturday, Sept. 12 and will host Bowdoin College at 12 p.m. in the team's home opener.
