Willimantic, CT - The 19th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team moved to 1-0-1 with a 1-1 tie at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) on Wednesday. Senior defender Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI) notched her first goal of the season for the Jeffs, while junior Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) dished out an assist.
ECSU took an early lead when senior forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, CT) scored her third goal of the season in the fourth minute of play. Amherst responded with nine first half shots, but could not muster a score against ECSU sophomore goalkeeper Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA), who tallied six saves.
The Jeffs continued to apply pressure in the second half, outshooting ECSU 15-3, but ECSU continued to maintain a narrow lead. Amherst finally knotted the score in the 88th minute when Chute took a pass on the run from Muller and lofted a long bomb from the touchline over Eastern senior goalkeeper Allison Sumecki's (Northford, CT) head and just under the crossbar.
Amherst junior goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) posted three saves in 90 minutes of play.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at NESCAC rival Bates College.
