AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team suffered its second straight loss on Wednesday, falling to visiting non-conference foe Wheaton College, 1-0. The Jeffs fell to 3-2-1 with the loss, while Wheaton improved to 6-4.
Amherst kept the ball on its end of the field throughout most of the opening frame, outshooting the Lyons 7-3, but couldn't manage to put many on the net as Wheaton sophomore keeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA) needed only one first-half save to hold the Jeffs scoreless. Lyon sophomore Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ) broke the scoreless tie at the 61:19-mark, taking a long feed from classmate Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA) and beating the defense up the right side before crossing in the game-winner. Amherst tried to rally down the stretch and kept the ball in the Lyons' zone for most of the final 10 minutes. However, scoring attempts by Amherst sophomore Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT) and rookie Mary Marvel (Williamsburg, MA) sailed just over the crossbar and Wheaton was able to hang on for the victory.
Amherst junior goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) tallied four saves in a losing effort, while Kronenberg needed just two stops to preserve the shutout.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against visiting NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.
