Amherst, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting non-conference foe Springfield College on Tuesday. Amherst rookie midfielder Natalie Ferraiolo (Palo Alto, CA) notched her first collegiate score to seal the win for the Jeffs, who improved to 3-0-1, while Springfield fell to 3-2-2.
Amherst opened the scoring just before the seven-minute mark as junior midfielder Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) dropped a header into the deep right corner to classmate Lesley Pruzansky (Saratoga, CA), who crossed the ball to a streaking Ferraiolo for the game-winning tally.
The two squads battled throughout the following 60 minutes of play, with both sides having near-scores. Springfield sophomore Nicole Hanewich (Cumerland, RI) almost found the net at the 27:04-mark, but missed just high, bouncing the shot off the crossbar. Amherst rookie forward Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) suffered a similar fate just moments after the break as her shot glanced off the hands of Springfield first-year keeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, MA) and caromed off the crossbar.
Amherst junior forward Amy Armstrong (Avon, CT) put the game away just over 22 minutes into the second half, taking a feed from classmate Sarah Shea (West Hartford, CT) and firing a left-footed laser off the right post and into the goal.
Amherst junior Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) and senior Scout Durwood (Shawnee Mission, KS) combined for the shutout in goal as Crowell tallied five saves and Durwood didn't face a shot on goal in just under 15 minutes of action. Jenney finished with four saves for Springfield.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at NESCAC rival Tufts University.
