Jeffs Top Wesleyan, 4-1

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's soccer team topped visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University on Saturday, 4-1. Junior midfielder Jenny Muller (Andover, MA) notched her second and third goals of the season to lead the Jeffs.

Amherst opened the scoring just 15 seconds into play when junior midfielder Lesley Pruzansky (Saratoga, CA) took a dish from rookie striker Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) right in front of the goal-mouth and slid it past Wesleyan first-year goalkeeper Andrea Giuliana (Wethersfield, CT). Muller added the eventual game-winner at the 32:47-mark, knocking home a header off a corner kick from senior tri-captain Sarah Coleman (New Haven, CT). The Cardinals mustered a response in the 41st minute when senior striker Sarah Hopkins (Portland, OR) received a low cross from classmate Natalie Cohen (Acton, MA) and slotted a shot past Amherst sophomore netminder Piper Crowell (San Rafael, CA) and into the lower left corner of the net to narrow the margin to 2-1 heading into the break.

Muller found the back of the net again in the second stanza, when she pounded home a header off a Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT) corner kick at the 56:15-mark. Yesnik capped the Jeffs' scoring seven minutes later, when she fired a laser into the back of the net after collecting a rebounded Alanna Darling (Charlton, MA) shot inside the eighteen-yard box.

Crowell and senior Emily Durwood (Shawnee Mission, KS) combined for four saves in goal as the Jeffs improved to 6-3-2 (4-2-1 NESCAC), while Giuliana posted six saves as Wesleyan fell to 2-7-2 (0-5-2 NESCAC).

Amherst returns to action Sunday at 3 p.m. against visiting conference rival Middlebury College.
