SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Elizabeth Ludlow '14 tallied a hat trick as the 19th-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team held on to defeat Swarthmore College (4-1) by a score of 11-8 on Tuesday night in non-conference action from Clothier Field.
Wearing crimson and gold laces, the Garnet (4-1) and Jeffs (2-2) played the game in support of the Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team which endured a tragic bus accident over the weekend.
Facing an 8-4 deficit to start the second half, Swarthmore fired off the first three goals of the period to come within one, but Amherst outscored the hosts 3-1 in the final minutes as Ludlow gave the Jeffs breathing room with a pair of late strikes.
Mia Haughton '16 continued her impressive rookie season with two goals and an assist for Amherst while Priscilla Tyler '15 and Megan Mills '15 each netted a pair of markers as well. Caroline Holliday '14 tallied a goal and two assists while Alex Philie '14 was collected a game-high six draws en route to a 17-4 overall Jeff advantage.
Sophomore Elyse Tierney led the Garnet offense with three goals, while senior Annalise Penikis added two goals and two assists. Senior Beth Martin and junior Caroline Murphy forced a game-high two turnovers apiece.
Swarthmore keepers Michelle Ammerman and freshman Connie Bowen split time in net, each making four saves. First-year Katelyn Salerno picked up the win for Amherst with six saves in a complete game.
At halftime, the Jeffs led 8-4 after grabbing 10 of 13 draws and outshooting the Garnet 17-11 over the opening frame.
Amherst fired quickly and often to open the contest with three goals in less than three minutes. After a timeout, the Garnet responded with three straight goals - including free position goals from Penikis and sophomore Sara Lentricchia - to knot the score at 3-3 with 12:11 remaining, but the Jeffs regained momentum with a 5-1 run to finish the half.
