Amherst Edges Drew University, 6-5

MADISON, NJ – The Amherst College women's lacrosse team got two goals from Elizabeth Ludlow '14 (Huntington, NY) and another two from Natalie Dugan '13 (Washington, DC) during its 6-5 win at Drew University Friday evening in Ranger Stadium.

Amherst (2-1) was able to hold off a late charge by the Rangers, who got two goals and an assist from Cara Jeffries. The teams were even in clears (10), draw controls (7) and ground balls (19), while the Lord Jeffs held a 20-15 edge in shots. Claire Bennett '12 (Westfield, NJ) and Julia Viani '12 (Concord, NH) combined for nine ground balls and caused two turnovers apiece.

Amherst accounted for the game's first two goals, as Hillary Densen '13 (Summit, NJ) put the Jeffs on the board at 3:23 before a free position attempt by Ludlow made it a 2-0 game midway through the half. The Rangers got on the scoreboard with 11:03 to play when Sloane Coles found the back of the net, and Stacie Brown got in on the action when she tied the game at 2-2 with 3:50 play to close out the scoring in the first frame.

Tied at 3-3 10 minutes into the second half, Amherst built its lead back up to two when Dugan and Annelies O'Dea (Pittsford, NY) recorded goals within 68 seconds of each others. After the Rangers cut their deficit to one, Dugan scored what proved to be the game winner with just under 12 minutes to go. Jeffries would respond with 3:35 left in the game for her second goal of the evening, but it would not be enough to overtake the Lord Jeffs.

Brown would get one last opportunity off a clear with under a minute remaining, but she was denied for the final time by Amherst's MC McClellan '14 (Denver, CO), who finished the night with four saves.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Wednesday, Mar. 23, when they travel to take on Connecticut College.
