AMHERST, MA – The ninth-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team faced fellow national powerhouse and NESCAC rival Colby College this afternoon at Hitchcock Field in Amherst, falling by a score of 11-6 in the Lord Jeffs' regular season finale. Amherst will enter the NESCAC Championship Tournament riding a three-game losing streak.
Colby jumped out of the gate quickly on what turned out to be a humid afternoon, scoring the first three goals of the game within 15 minutes. The Jeffs allowed only one more first-half Colby goal and scored four of their own to even the score at 4-4 by halftime.
Leading the charge in the first half for the Jeffs were sophomore Amy Craig (Denver, CO) and junior Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY). Craig tallied two of the team's four goals while Hoeg added a goal and two assists.
Colby came out strong in the second half, tallying the first goal after only 23 seconds, and went on to score two of the next three goals to push the lead to 7-5. The Jeffs did their best to muster a comeback but could not combat the White Mule duo of Kate Sheridan and Lauren Barrett. Sheridan tallied four goals on the day while Barrett helped push the White Mule attack by adding three scores of her own. The Colby defense held Amherst points-leader Alyssa Briody (Denver, CO) to just a single assist in the game.
Amherst falls to 8-6 on the season and 5-4 in conference play, and will take on Wesleyan University Sunday in NESCAC quarterfinal action. Game time is set for noon at Wesleyan.
