AMHERST, MA – Junior attacker Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) posted four goals and an assist to lead the eighth-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team over visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 19-8, on Thursday afternoon. Six other players posted a pair a goals for the Jeffs, who improve to 6-1 (3-1 NESCAC), while Conn. falls to 4-7 and remains winless in conference play (0-5).
Rookie phenom Mary Noonan (W. Roxbury, MA) got the scoring started, grabbing the opening draw control and notching the first of her pair just 16 seconds into play. The Camels hung tough in the early minutes, countering Noonan's goal with a free position tally from sophomore Colby Tallman (Norwell, MA) and then adding a second from leading goal scorer first-year Paige Pascarelli (Wayne, PA) at 20:36. Senior tri-captain Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD) put the hosts up, 3-2, just seven seconds later with a wide open shot on senior goaltender Alix Werner (Rochester, NY) as Amherst rattled off five straight goals, including a perfectly placed shot just inside the right pipe from Noonan and a pair from Briody, over the next 15 minutes. Camel sophomore midfielder Lindsey Coit (South Portland, ME) managed a score at 5:13, converting a feed from senior co-captain Maggie Driscoll (Peabody, MA) to stop the drought. Amherst maintained control into the break, however, highlighted by a beautiful clear from sophomore goaltender Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) to senior midfielder Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI), who sprinted the ball into the Amherst offensive zone. With three minutes remaining, Noonan drew two defenders and dished the ball to junior attacker Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH), who netted her first goal of the season to cap the first half scoring at 8-3.
Junior midfielder Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) helped the Jeffs pick up where they left off in the second stanza, burying a sidearm shot that beat Warner mid-left. Sophomore Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY) added the second of her pair just over a minute later, but Conn. responded as Driscoll notched two of her own a minute apart to cut the lead back to five, 10-5. Briody, Hanley, junior Lauren Dudley (Baltimore, MD) and rookie Amy Craig (Denver, CO) each added unassisted tallies over a seven-minute span to stretch the Amherst edge once again. Conn. notched two scores in the final two minutes but the Jeffs had the game in hand, and junior Dana Kuper iced the cake with a buzzer-beating free-position shot as the Jeffs sailed away with the win.
Chute and Noonan each scooped three ground balls on the day, while junior defender Maggie Roth (Wayne, PA) caused a trio of turnovers. Noonan also contributed five draw controls and Dudley added four. McEvoy and sophomore Kathleen Boucher (Washington, DC) combined for three saves, while Werner stopped 13 Jeff shots.
