AMHERST, MA - The third-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Regional Final with a 15-8 win over visiting Colorado College on Saturday at Hitchcock Field. Sophomore attacker Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) paced the Jeffs offensively, notching five goals. Junior midfielder Mary Kate Allen (Springfield, MA) also racked up a trio of goals and dished out four assists for the hosts.
Amherst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Aldrich and junior middie Anne Jamieson (Princeton, NJ). The Tigers countered, shortly thereafter, when sophomore midfielder Allison Craig (Denver, CO) took a feed and fired a shot into the back of the net. The Jeffs extended the lead to 5-1 when sophomore midfielder Jackie Sargent (Concord, MA) notched her second goal on the day, knocking a rebound past Tiger junior goaltender Cindy Yi (Englewood, CO). Aldrich tallied yet another goal shortly before the break, giving Amherst a 9-2 advantage heading into halftime. The Tigers cut the lead to 9-5 on a pair of goals by senior midfielders Rebecca Cashman (Newton, MA) and Erin Simons (Wilmette, IL). The Jeffs tallied a trio of unanswered goals midway through the second half to extend the lead to 13-5. Allen rounded the scoring out at 15-8, with 42 seconds remaining on the clock.
Jeff junior goaltender Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) was stellar in net, finishing with 13 saves in 56 minutes of play, while Yi recorded 12.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 13-2 overall, while Colorado College's season comes to an end at 8-9. The Jeffs return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the regional final against visiting Union College, who downed Nazareth College, 14-9 in the second regional semifinal game of the day.
