March 17, 2002

SALISBURY, MD - In a torrential downpour at Salisbury University on Sunday, the second-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 6-5 win over No. 11 Mary Washington College of Fredericksburg, Virginia, behind a four-goal performance by sophomore midfielder Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD).

Martin - who played in her first game as a Jeff after transferring from Goucher College - was joined in the scoring column by juniors Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) and Anne Jamieson (Princeton, NJ), who each added a goal. Sophomore attack Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) chipped in with an assist, while junior goaltender Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) turned away 11 shots, including a potential game-tying goal in the waning seconds.

Mary Washington fell to 1-2 with the loss.

Amherst will play at Salisbury again Wednesday at 4 p.m. against the host Sea Gulls, currently ranked 10th in the nation with a 2-1 record.
