AMHERST, Mass. - Amherst College senior Sarah Scheessele (Pittsburgh, PA) scored a game-high four goals, including the 100th of her career, to lead the second-ranked women's lacrosse team to a dominating 15-1 victory over Little III and NESCAC rival Wesleyan University in Amherst on Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Erin Beaumont (Summit, NJ) and Laura Schifter (Washington, DC) each picked up four points, and senior co-captain Kristin Osborn (Morristown, NJ) added a hat trick, as the Jeffs improve to 8-1 on the season, 4-1 in league games. Wesleyan, whose lone goal came from junior Sara Broder-Fingert (Newtown, MA), falls to 2-6, 0-5 in the NESCAC.
The Jeffs did not wait long to take control of Saturday's contest, with Osborn finishing a Beaumont feed just 20 seconds after the opening whistle for a 1-0 Amherst lead. Sophomore Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA), who scored a career-high six goals in the Jeffs' 17-8 win over Wellesley College on Thursday, added an unassisted tally three minutes later, as the Jeffs continued to dominate possession. Scheessele started her afternoon at 21:07, breaking past two Wesleyan defenders and ripping a shot past Cardinal goalie Lynn Model (Scarsdale, NY).
Scheessele's 21st goal of the season started a flurry of Amherst scores, as the Jeffs converted four of their next five shot attempts. Beaumont finished an Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) feed to put the Jeffs ahead 4-0, Osborn converted a pass from Beaumont for a 5-0 edge, sophomore Mary Kate Allen (Springfield, MA) scored a nifty goal in transition for a 6-0 lead, and Scheessele finished a Ouimet pass to give Amherst a seven-goal cushion with 15:34 left in the half.
From there, the Jeffs went into more of a possession-oriented set, keeping the better part of play inside Wesleyan's defensive zone. Sophomore Molly O'Connor (Baltimore, MD) extended the lead to 8-0 off a Ouimet feed at the 6:46-mark, before Scheessele scored her 100th career goal on a free-position attempt at 2:49. Osborn capped the Jeffs' best offensive half of the season with an unassisted goal 90 seconds later, as the hosts took a 10-0 lead into the intermission.
The second half opened in much the same fashion as the first, with Schifter extending the lead to 11-0 1:26 after the break. Off the ensuing draw, the Cardinals took advantage of one of their only solid scoring chances of the afternoon, with Broder-Fingert emerging from a scrum in front of the goalmouth to fire a shot past senior Jeff goalie Jess Thaxton (Wayland, MA). The Wesleyan goal was quickly answered by the Jeffs, however, with Schifter adding her second goal of the period just over a minute later to extend the Amherst lead back to 11.
Off the ensuing draw, the Jeffs worked the clock on offense, holding the ball in the Cardinal end for much of the next 10 minutes. Scheessele capped her four-goal afternoon with a pretty finish of a Schifter feed at 14:37, before Schifter set up junior Meg Martin (Longmeadow, MA) for her first goal of the season at the 11:06 mark. Aldrich capped the scoring with a right-handed rocket to the top of the cage with 8:05 left, giving the Jeffs a season-high nine different goal scorers in the win.
For the Jeffs, Scheessele's four goals was one of three four-point efforts, along with the two-goal, two-assist afternoon from Schifter and the one-goal, three-assist effort from Beaumont. Osborn finished with a hat trick to go over the 150-goal mark for her career, and Ouimet finished with a pair of assists in addition to her 15th goal of the season. Thaxton and sophomore Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) combined to make three saves in goal for the Jeffs, while Model finished with eight stops for the Cardinals.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 8-1, 4-1 in NESCAC play, heading into next Wednesday's away date at Tufts University. The Cardinals fall to 2-6, 0-5 in conference action.
