Ouimet Leads Jeffs Past Wellesley, 17-8

April 12, 2001

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Amherst College attacker Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) scored three times in each half en route to a career-high six goals, leading the second-ranked women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 victory over visiting Wellesley College on Thursday afternoon. Senior co-captain Kristin Osborn (Morristown, NJ) added four goals and two assists for the Jeffs (7-1), and classmate Sarah Scheessele (Pittsburgh, PA) added three tallies and one helper, as Amherst snapped Wellesley's (8-3) four-game win streak.

Ouimet, who scored five goals in limited action as a first-year, helped the Jeffs to an early 2-0 lead with a nifty finish of a Mary Kate Allen (Springfield, MA) feed 2:52 into the game, just 22 seconds after sophomore Erin Beaumont (Summit, NJ) opened the scoring off an assist from Osborn. Just over three minutes later, the sophomore finished an Anne Jamieson (Princeton, NJ) helper to give the Jeffs a 3-0 lead, before Wellesley went into a possession-oriented offensive set, holding the ball in the Amherst end for the next five minutes.

The extended Wellesley possession, however, could not produce a shot on goal, and the Jeffs wasted little time after recovering a Blue turnover, with Osborn finishing a Beaumont feed in transition at the 18:40-mark. Again, Wellesley held the ball in the Amherst end for several minutes, and again they came away empty. First-year Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) put the Jeffs up 5-0 on another goal in transition, before setting up Beaumont 32 seconds later for a 6-0 Amherst advantage. Ouimet finished the natural hat trick with a free-position conversion at 9:28, before Scheessele took advantage of a pretty pass from Aldrich to put the Jeffs ahead 8-0 just inside the eight-minute mark.

Wellesley, an NCAA Tournament team in 2000, finally got going after the Scheesele goal, getting on the scoreboard courtesy of a Claudia Veritas (Goffstown, NH) goal just 40 seconds after the Amherst tally. Veritas, who entered the game with 50 points in 10 games (36 goals, 14 assists), reversed her role three minutes later, feeding senior Christin Bracken (Port Washington, NY) to cut the Amherst edge to 8-2 at halftime.

The Jeffs came out on fire in the second half, scoring five unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes to break the game open and take a 13-2 lead. Osborn started the onslaught 50 seconds after intermission, converting a Ouimet feed to put the Jeffs up 9-2, before Scheessele and Ouimet alternated goals to score four times in 4:46. Wellesley responded with back-to-back goals, including a fancy finish from Veritas on the ensuing draw after a Grace Tsan (Delmar, NY) score, before Osborn wrapped her 27th and 28th goals of the season around a goal from Wellesley sophomore Lisa Andruskiewicz (Beverly, MA).

Ouimet capped her career afternoon with a goal off an Osborn feed at 8:23 to put the Jeffs back ahead by 11, 16-5. With the Jeffs' defensive starters on the bench, Wellesley capitalized to score three times in the final 5:47, including a pair of goals and an assist by Tsan. Amherst first-year Jenny Rossman (Newtown, MA) scored her first career goal off a free-position attempt with 27 seconds remaining, capping the 17-8 victory for the Jeffs.

Defensively, the Jeffs received a stellar game from senior co-captain Alison Kitay (Washington, DC), who finished with four ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Jamieson turned in a solid effort in her second career start, picking up five ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers. Offensively, the Jeffs exploded for a season-high 17 goals, thanks to the Ouimet and Osborn show, with duo combining for 10 goals and three assists. Scheessele added a hat trick and an assist, closing to within three goals of the century-mark for her career. Beaumont added a pair of goals, and Aldrich picked up a pair of assists to go along with her lone tally. Wellesley, who received an eight-save performance from first-year goalie Allisa Gordon (Sudbury, MA), received a three-goal, two-assist afternoon from Tsan, and two goals and an assist from Veritas.

With the win, Amherst improves to 7-1, finishing a perfect 4-0 in non-conference games during the 2001 regular season. The Jeffs finish their season with five-straight conference games, beginning with Saturday's home date against Little III rival Wesleyan University. Wellesley, who falls to 8-3 with their first loss in five games, returns to the Pioneer Valley on Saturday for a NEWMAC conference game at Smith College.
