Women's Lacrosse Posts Pair of Wins

Women's lacrosse posted a pair of victories last week to rise from No. 14 in the nation to No. 10 this week. The team claimed only their third-ever win over Tufts University with an 11-9 decision before claiming its first Little III win of the year with a 17-10 victory over Wesleyan. Senior tri-captain Heather Kestner (Wilmington, DE) tallied six goals during the week as she became the second player to break the 100 career-goal mark this season. Kestner currently has 102 goals and 32 assists at Amherst.

Amherst battled back from an early 3-1 deficit to Tufts to claim a 4-3 lead with just under eight minutes left in the first half. The teams flip-flopped leads until midway through the second half when Jen Corso (Collingswood, NJ) tied the game at 8-8 and sparked a three-goal rally by Amherst to take the lead for good. Corso posted three of those four goals as Amherst outshot Tufts 37-22, along with causing 17 of the Jumbos' 25 turnovers while making only 12 of its own.

The team led by as much as 14-5 midway through the second half at Wesleyan as Amherst used a pair of four-goal runs to pull away from the Cardinals. Kestner led the team with four goals, while senior tri-captain Heidi Cline (Andover, MA) and sophomores Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA) and Katherine Poulin (St. Davids, PA) each notched three a piece. Netminder Sarah Evans (Columbus, OH) made 10 saves in 46 minutes, followed by four by rookie Jess Thaxton (Wayland, MA) in the closing 14 minutes.
