AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Three student-athletes representing Amherst College lacrosse were named to the GTE/CoSIDA Spring At-Large College Division Academic All-District I Teams. Members were chosen from 76 nominees from the sports of crew, golf, lacrosse, tennis, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track and field at non-Division I institutions in New England and Eastern Canada.
Todd Nichols (Skaneateles, NY), a junior midfielder for Amherst men's lacrosse, earned First Team honors to make him eligible for national recognition. The All-Snively selection began the season as a team quad-captain and a Premier Midfielder, as chosen by Face-Off Magazine. Nichols led Amherst in a pair of late-game comebacks, notching his only two goals against Springfield in the final 41 seconds toward an 11-10 victory before forcing overtime against Connecticut College with a shot just 50 seconds before the regulation buzzer. In addition to compiling 62 goals and 16 assists at the Jeffs' top face-off man over the last three years, Nichols boasts a 3.69 cumulative GPA as a Political Science major.
Nichols also earned Academic All-District honors in Fall 1997 as an All-New England free safety, and he has been named a quad-captain of the 1998 football team.
Heidi Cline (Andover, MA) and Irene Permut (Wilmington, DE) earned Second Team honors as members of the two-time ECAC Champion women's lacrosse team. Cline closed out her career as Amherst's Career Goals-Scored leader, tallying 129 over four years as part of her 171 points, second on the all-time scoring list. The tri-captain led the team on attack to four-straight post-season appearances, including an NCAA bid in 1996. Cline has served as the President of the Outing Club and as a two-year Resident Counselor while maintaining a 3.38 GPA as an Economics major.
Permut claims her second Academic All-District honors after earning Second Team recognition on the Fall/Winter At-Large team as a field hockey tri-captain. The junior tallied six goals and eight assists, and the midfielder claimed IWLCA/Brine All-America Second Team honors for lacrosse. Permut has compiled a 3.69 GPA over three years as a Psychology major, and she will resume her captaining duties as a two-time All-American field hockey midfielder.
Amherst lacrosse continued to rank among the finest teams in New England as both teams concluded their seasons in the ECAC Tournament in their fourth-straight post-season appearances. The men finished with a 9-7 record while the women claimed the ECAC Championship with a 9-8 overtime victory over Bowdoin for a 12-3 mark.
