OSWEGO, N.Y. – Snapping the Lakers' six-game unbeaten streak and picking up their first shut of the winter, the Amherst College women's hockey team took a 1-0 lead in the first before adding two third period goals to the board to shut out Oswego State University, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the Marano Campus Center.
With the victory, the Mammoths get back in the win column and head into the month-long winter break with a 3-3-2 overall ledger, while Oswego drops to 7-3-1 on the season. Amherst returns to action in the New Year, kicking off 2020 on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 7PM when they travel to William Smith for a two-game weekend series.
Striking at the 13:48 mark in the first period, Amherst capitalized on a Lakers' slashing penalty to take an early lead. Her second power play goal of the season and third overall, senior captain Anne Malloy found the back of the net off dishes from Stephanie Nomicos '22, Emma Flynn '21 to put the visitors ahead, 1-0.
The clock hit zero in a tightly contested second stanza with neither side to able to beat the opposing netminder despite 19 shots being put on frame between the sides.
Giving Amherst a 2-0 cushion with 8:32 remaining in regulation, Malloy potted her second of the night to register the first multi-goal game of her career. Kaitlin Hoang '21 and Kenzie MacDonald '22 were credited with the assist on the personal milestone play.
Pushing the Mammoths to the 3-0 victory, Hoang tallied the final dagger for the visitors, notching an empty net score with 18 seconds to go to cap off the win.
The Lakers held the edge in shots on the day, 31-22, and went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Amherst finished 1-for-7 up a skater.
Stopping all 31 shots faced, Caitlin Walker '22 (3-3-2) earned the win for the Mammoths in between the pipes, while Rachael Farmer (6-3-1) made 19 saves for the Lakers in the losing effort.
