Three-Goal Second Period Lifts No. 10/8 Amherst Past Colby, 5-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Purple & White tallied four unanswered goals as the No. 10/8 Amherst College women's ice hockey team downed Colby College, 5-1 Saturday afternoon at Alfond Ice Rink. 

With the win, Amherst improves to 9-4-2 on the year and to 5-3-1 in league play, while Colby falls to 0-13-3 overall (0-9-1 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 24, when they welcome Elmira to Orr Rink for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt.

Tallying her team-leading 12th goal of the season, Alex Toupal '18 gave the Purple & White a 1-0 lead 7:55 into the opening period. Picking off a breakout pass just inside the offensive blue line, Toupal deked around a defender and sent a backhand shot past the Colby goalkeeper.  

Evening the score a 1-1 at the 13:10 mark in the second period, Katie McLaughlin set up in front of the goal, McLaughlin deflected a slap shot from the point into the netting.

Amherst responded less than two minutes later, with Katie Savage '19 notching a short-handed score at the 11:26 mark. Halley Fine stonewalled Toupal's initial attempt on a breakaway, but Savage crashed the net and sent the rebound over the goal line.  

Jocelyn Hunyadi '19 extended the Purple & White's lead to 3-1 with 6:41 on the clock, skating behind the goal and sending a wrap around shot through the legs of Fine. Katelyn Pantera '19 dished out the feed on the marker.

Recording her second goal of the outing, Toupal made it a 4-1 contest at the 3:13 mark, ripping a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot over the shoulder of Fine, short side. Sara Culhane '17 assisted the goal.

The Purple & White scored what proved to be the game's final goal with 8:58 remaining on the clock. Converting on a 5-on-3 power play, Culhane gave Amherst a 5-1 lead, collecting a rebound on the left post and sending a shot into an open net. Toupal and Caitlyn Ryan '17 provided the helpers on the goal.

GAME NOTES

  • Goalie Sabrina Dobbins '18 (4-3-1) made 26 stops in goal for Amherst to earn the win, while Halley Fine (0-9-2) registered 28 saves for the Mules in the losing effort.
  • Amherst owned a 33-27 edge in shot differential in the matchup.
  • The Purple & White finished 1-for-3 on the power play, while Colby went 0-for-2 up a skater.
