GORHAM, Maine – Six different Purple & White skaters recorded a goal and junior Alex Toupal netted a hat trick as the Amherst College women's ice hockey team defeated non-conference opponent Southern Maine, 8-0 Sunday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
With the win, Amherst improves to 4-3-1 on the season, while Southern Maine falls to 3-7-0 overall. Amherst returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Middlebury College for a 7 p.m. conference tilt.
Anne Malloy '20 tallied her first collegiate goal early in the matchup to give Amherst a 1-0 lead, corralling a pass from Toupal and beating Courtney Davis at the 5:15 mark. Doubling the Purple & White lead four minutes later, Toupal registered her second point on the game with a shorthanded goal with 10:46 on the clock.
Amherst notched two more goals in the second stanza to extend their lead to 4-0, with Katie Savage '19 earning a power play goal at the 9:42 mark and Lynndy Smith '17 finding nylon for the first time this season with 1:16 remaining in the period.
Maintaining control in the final 20 minutes of play, the Purple & White exploded for four unanswered tallies, with Miriam Eickhoff '19, Toupal and Jocelyn Hunyadi '19 each sending shots past the Husky netminder.
- Sabrina Dobbins '18 (2-3-0) registered 15 saves in the winning effort for Amherst, while Courtney Davis (0-3-0) made 32 stops in goal for Southern Maine.
- Amherst owned a 46-15 edge in shot differential, including a 20-4 advantage in the third period.
- The Purple & White finished 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Huskies went 0-for-1 up a skater.
