No. 5/4 Amherst Scores Six Third Period Goals to Down Salem State, 10-0

AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 5/4 Amherst College women's ice hockey team scored six goals in the third period to down non-conference opponent Salem State University, 10-0, at Orr Rink Tuesday evening.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Brenna Sullivan scored the game-winner 3:08 into the opening period, stealing the puck on the right hash mark and roofing a bad angle shot, short side. 
  • Viking goalkeeper Jenn Toussaint was stellar for the Vikings in the first stanza, blanking both Katelyn Pantera '19 and Erin Martin '16 on breakaway opportunities at the 19:20 and 16:10 mark, respectively.
  • Up a skater on the power play in the second period, Eileen Harris '16 made it a 2-0 contest with 14:30 on the clock, collecting cross-ice pass from Martin on the back door and sending the puck into an open net.
  • Martin gave Amherst a 3-0 cushion less than three minutes later, intercepting a breakout pass at the offensive blue line, beating a Viking defender and sending a hard, low shot into the right corner of the net.
  • The Purple & White wrapped up the second period with a 4-0 advantage, as a pass from Sullivan that hit of the skate of Emma Griese '18 in front of the net found its way over the goal line with 9:32 remaining.
  • Junior Camille Herzog scored at the 14:47 mark in the final period to make it a 5-0 game, ripping a snap shot from the right point through traffic and into the netting. The goal marked the first score of Herzog's collegiate career.
  • Leading Amherst in shots through the first two periods, Molly Connolly '17 capped off a strong game by scoring a goal 13 seconds later. In a second effort play, Connolly tapped the puck over the goal line at the 14:34 mark to give Amherst a 6-0 lead. The score was the first of Connolly's collegiate career.
  • The Purple & White would score four more times before the final buzzer to secure the 10-0 victory, with Alex Toupal '18, Martin, Jamie McNamara '19, and Caitlyn Ryan '17 each notching a score apiece.
  • Connolly led all skaters with eight shots on target, while Courtney Smith led the Vikings with three shots on net.
  • Bailey Plaman '18 (4-0-0) made 14 saves in the winning effort for Amherst. Jenn Toussaint made 29 saves in two periods of action, while Katherine Crane collected 16 saves in a relief effort for the Vikings.
