No. 6/3 Amherst Suffers First Loss of Season, Falls to Bowdoin 3-2 in Thriller

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Assistant captain Eileen Harris '16 tied the score at two apiece with 2:22 to play, however the No. 6/3 Amherst College women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-2, to Bowdoin College at Watson Arena Friday evening in NESCAC action.


Amherst (8-1-3, 4-1-2 NESCAC)
Bowdoin (6-5-0, 3-2-0 NESCAC)


  • Amherst held a slight advantage in shots, 28-21, including a 12-7 advantage in the first period and an 11-5 edge in the third. 
  • After a scoreless first stanza, Brenna Sullivan '18 made it a 1-0 contest 1:50 into the second period. The tally was her third of the season.
  • Bowdoin capitalized on two of four possible power play opportunities in the final nine minutes of the second stanza to head into the final period with a 2-1 lead.
  • The Polar Bears evened the game at the 11:48 mark, with Maureen Greason redirecting a shot from Maryanne Iodice past the Amherst net minder on the left post. 
  • Iodice gave Bowdoin its first lead of the game with 59 seconds remaining in the second. In an unassisted play, Iodice corralled a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated into the offensive end and sent a puck top shelf into the netting.
  • Unrelenting, the Purple & White knotted the game at two with 2:22 remaining. In an unassissted play, Harris tallied her fourth goal of the year after a Bowdoin miscue in the crease. 
  • With eight seconds remaining in the third, Ariana Bourque made it a 3-2 game. Collecting a pass from Miranda Bell, Bourque skated towards net and beat Dobbins to give Bowdoin the victory. 
  • Sophomore goalie Sabrina Dobbins registered 18 saves in the loss. Bowdoin's Lan Crofton made 26 saves in winning effort.


  • Amherst and Bowdoin face off again tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 16 at Watson Arena beginning at 3 p.m.
