Jeffs Top Holy Cross, 3-1

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Amherst College women's hockey team used a pair of third period goals to help the Jeffs stake a 3-1 victory over NCAA Division I Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass.

After a scoreless first period that saw Holy Cross (7-3-1) edge Amherst (7-1-1) in shots on goal, 8-5, the Jeffs netted the game's first goal when senior assistant captain Tori Salmon scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season just 1:52 into the second frame on a feed from Emma Griese '18 to set the score at 1-0.

The Purple & White dominated play in the second stanza, outshooting the Crusaders, 15-5, but apart from just the early goal, goalie Alexandra Stevenson was stellar between the pipes making 14 of her 22 saves.

In the third period, Holy Cross leveled the game at 1-1 when Kara Violette scored her seventh marker of the campaign, this one on the power play, with Mackenzie Boardman and Mary Klimasewisi assisting on the play at the 12:05 mark.

Amherst responded late in the period when Alex Toupal '18 scored an unassisted goal at the 18:20 mark to give the Jeffs a 2-1 edge. Toupal then set up Amherst's final goal with just seven seconds remaining as senior captain Madeline Tank delivered her fifth score of the season to set the final score at 3-1.

The Purple & White received a 24-save effort from Yuma Evans '17, with 11 of those stops coming in the final 20 minutes of action. Toupal led Amherst with four shots on goal, while Salmon, Tank and Erin Martin '16 each finished with three shots on target.

Stevenson finished with 22 saves in the losing effort for Holy Cross, while Boardman and Klimasewiski finished with four shots on net each.

The Jeffs return to action on Sunday, Jan. 4 at Southern Maine at 4 p.m. in non-league play in the second game of a seven-game road trip to start the 2015 portion of the schedule.
