Salmon Scores Hat-Trick, Jeffs Cruise Past Cortland, 9-1

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior forward Tori Salmon notched a hat-trick and dished out three assists as the Amherst College women's ice hockey team cruised to a 9-1 non-conference road win Sunday against SUNY Cortland.

With the win, the Jeffs remain perfect in 2014 with a 5-0-0 overall mark. The Red Dragons have now lost three straight to drop to 2-5-0 on the year.

Salmon was involved in six of the team's nine goals. Madeline Tank '15 scored twice and recorded an assist, and Eileen Harris '16 dished out four assists and added a goal. Emily Flom '15, Lynndy Smith '16 and Alex Toupal '18 each scored once.

Amherst took advantage of a power play opportunity in the first period to get on the board first as Smith scored at the 11:40 mark. She was assisted by Salmon and Toupal on the play. It was the only goal of the opening stanza as the Jeffs went on to score four goals in both the second and third periods.

In just 1:23 into the second, Harris put the away team ahead by two. Under six minutes later, Amherst scored on another power play for a 3-0 lead. Tank recorded the score and was assisted by Flom.

At 14:20, Toupal increased the Jeffs' lead to four with her second goal of the year. Roughly two minutes later, Salmon scored her first of the game to give Amherst a 5-0 lead.

Josie Fletcher of SUNY Cortland scored with 1:53 to go in the second period to cut the deficit to four entering the third. However, it was all Amherst in the final 20 minutes of regulation as they added four more goals en route to the commanding eight-goal win.

Salmon scored two of her three goals in the third period, including a power play score at the 15:17 mark, while Tank and Flom also added scores.

Amherst held a decisive 51-to-16 edge in shots and also finished 3-for-4 on power plays. Sabrina Dobbins '18 saved 15 shots for her second win of the season (2-0-0), while Kelly Farinella stopped 42 shots for the Red Dragons in a losing effort (0-1-0).

The Purple & White return to the ice Friday, Dec. 5 for a 7:30 p.m. road contest against non-conference opponent Norwich.
